Huxford High School , as it was named, was establishment in 1928 for grades 1 - 9. In 1978 the school became Huxford Elementary School having grades K - 6. A new wing was added to the campus in 1997 due to an increase in enrollment.
The original building has 8 classrooms, an auditorium, and an office complex. The office complex is composed of an office for the school secretary and an office shared by the principal and school counselor. The new wing has 6 classrooms and a teacher workroom.
Huxford has had seven principals: Mr. Tab Sellers (1928-1929), Mr. Ben Tew (1929-1946), Mr. Thurston Nelson (1946-1954), Mr. J. Z. Walding (1954-1955), Mr. William Gorum (1954-1988), Mrs. Milner Donald (1988-1992) and Miss Betty J. Warren (1992-Present).
In 1955 Mr. William Gorum was hired as principal. Mr. Gorum would remain principal for 33 years, which is the longest tenure of its principals. At various times during Mr. Gorum's tenure, he was the school's secretary/bookkeeper, taught classes, managed the lunchroom, performed janitorial duties, and coached boys' basketball and softball.
It was in 1978 after the school at McCullough burned that the schools at McCullough and Freemanville consolidated with Huxford. It was at this time that grades 7 - 9 of Huxford were moved to schools in Atmore. Huxford became a K - 6 elementary school.
In 1992 Ms. Betty Warren began her tenure as principal of Huxford Elementary. In 1993 HES began adding a second class to each grade. At the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year, Huxford for the first time has two classes of students in grades K-6. The faculty and staff is composed of 14 classroom teachers, 1 counselor, 1 reading specialist, 1 librarian, 1 physical education teacher, 3 Title 1 aides, 1 Indian education aide, 1 secretary/bookkeeper, 2 custodians, 3 lunchroom workers and 5 bus drivers.
We have been extremely fortunate in that we have maintained or increased in enrollment on an annual basis. The Poarch Creek Indian reservation is located within our school district; therefore, we have an Indian population of approximately 37%.
In 1997 Huxford Elementary added a new wing to the school which contains grades 4-6 as well as a teacher's workroom. Some renovations such as the lowering of the ceilings and the addition of central heat and cooling have been made to the original building, but it still remains as one of only two schools in Escambia County to be in its original form.
The teaching of reading, math and advancement in the area of technology are top priorities in the goals and objectives of the school. In 1999 two schools in Escambia County were chosen to become Alabama Literacy Demonstration Sites. HES was one of the two schools in the county to be chosen. It is through the use of principles of this Alabama Reading Initiative that Huxford is striving to achieve 100% literacy for all
students. In math, grades K-4 use Saxon math that we feel is an excellent program. We presently have two computer labs, one housing a Research Writing Center plus computers for remediation/enrichment and one housing a Writing to Read 2000 lab. There is least one computer in each classroom with Internet assess. In grades 3 - 6, there are 3 computers in each classroom with Internet assess.
Since the opening of Huxford High School , there have been many positive changes, which have proven to be very beneficial to the students. The hard work and dedication of the many principals, teachers, staff and community has made Huxford Elementary one of the most popular and successful schools in the area. In the year 1999-2001, the Alabama State Department of
Education assigned Huxford Elementary A- rating.
During the school year 2004-2005, the State of Alabama named HES as one of the 13 top performing elementary schools in the state of Alabama . HES was named a TorchBearer school! The elementary schools were selected because they each had at least 70 percent of their students on the free/reduced price lunch program and they each score at the 50th percentile or above on the SAT-10 in every subject and every grade. I can assure you this accomplishment was obtained due to the dedicated faculty/staff of this school.
