Turtle Point Environmental Science Center Curriculum

The following courses will be offered for the 2009-2010 academic year. Please download a teacher packet and call our office to schedule a class.

Pre-K

Animal Tales

Students will listen to fun animal stories before exploring Turtle Point and meeting the animals.

 Patterns of Change

Students will recognize patterns and textures in natural objects. Simple classifying and identifying will be involved.

Kindergarten

Hug A Bug

Enjoy an overview of insects and spiders. Students will be able to identify body parts of these animals and will take home an art project that reinforces the concept of metamorphosis.

Common Critters

The basic characteristics of each animal group found at Turtle Point will be discussed. Students will understand the basic needs of these animals and how to group them based on body characteristics.

First Grade

Loafing in Logville

Students will do a field study of animal habitats. Classifying, graphing, and data collection are involved.

Know Bones About It

Students will be able to identify bones of the human body and will understand how nutrition affects bone health. This class includes an art project that reinforces the names and positions of bones in the human body.

Second Grade

Scales and Tails

Students will learn about animal adaptations while studying fish. Your students will get to show their creativity by designing their own fish.

Water You Doing?

Join us for a journey through the water cycle. Students will become a droplet of water and will discover many paths that water can take on the journey.

Chatty Chirpers

Students will study bird adaptations and will recognize native species while on a bird watching hike.

Third Grade

From Plow to Chow

Come garden with us and find out how food gets to your plate. Students will learn about seed germination, gardening and other agricultural basics. This class includes a fun project that students will take home.

Fur that Flys

Students will be introduced to bats, a common but misunderstood animal of Alabama . This class includes an art project and a game that will help students understand how bats use their senses on a daily basis.

Fourth Grade

Our Natural Natives

Students will learn about the conservation practices of Native Americans. This class includes an art project that requires an additional $5 materials fee per class.

Wood Do You Know About Trees

Students will learn to identify several native tree species while focusing on the basics of tree anatomy, classification, and identification.

Hooray for Herps

Join us for a herp hunt! Students will compare and contrast reptiles and amphibians while discussing the concepts of metamorphosis, endothermic, and ectothermic. Students will take home a project relating to reptiles of this region.

Fifth Grade and Up

Splish Splash

Water quality will be discussed and sampling techniques will be demonstrated. Students will work in cooperative groups to identify stream macroinvertebrates. Students will walk in the creek and will need a change of closed toe shoes that can get wet for this class. This class includes making fish prints on t-shirts. Turtle Point can supply the t-shirts for an additional $3 per student. If you choose this option, we must know the sizes that you need one month before your scheduled class .

Fierce, Feathered Flyers

Students will be introduced to the food chain and the biology of raptors through the dissection of owl pellets. Please note that there is an additional $1.50 charge per student to cover the owl pellets.

Get Your Bearings

Learn to use a compass and map. This class will introduce students to topographic maps and will involve an exercise in compass navigation.

Special Programs (3rd grade and up)

Team Building

Class limited to 25 participants. Come challenge your students to a day of activities designed to build leadership and cooperation skills. This class is also great for staff development.
